Trivex®

Trivex®, also known as the transilluminated powered phlebectomy system, is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat clusters of varicose veins or large, symptomatic varicosities. This procedure is particularly useful for patients with extensive or complicated patterns of varicose veins, which may be difficult to address with traditional sclerotherapy or endovenous ablation techniques. Trivex® utilizes a specialized light source to visualize and accurately target the affected veins, enabling their precise removal with minimal scarring and discomfort.

During the Trivex® procedure, the patient is usually placed under local anesthesia or light sedation. A small incision is made near the area of the varicose veins, and a transilluminating light device is introduced under the skin. The light illuminates the underlying veins, allowing the surgeon to clearly visualize the network of affected veins.

Once the veins are identified, a powered phlebectomy device, which consists of a hollow rotating tube connected to suction, is inserted through the incision. The surgeon uses the device to gently remove the targeted veins by suctioning them out through the tube. The procedure is minimally invasive, resulting in less tissue trauma, minimal scarring, and a faster recovery time compared to traditional surgical vein stripping.

After the procedure, patients may be asked to wear compression stockings to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, although strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks.

Trivex® is considered a safe and effective treatment option for patients with extensive or complicated varicose veins, offering both symptom relief and cosmetic improvement. The use of transillumination technology helps to ensure precise targeting of the affected veins, reducing the risk of complications and improving overall patient outcomes.

During the procedure, a healthcare professional, usually a vascular specialist, will use ultrasound guidance to locate the problematic vein. They will then insert a small needle or catheter into the vein and inject the Varithena foam. The foam fills the entire diameter of the vein, causing the sclerosing agent to make direct contact with the vein walls. This contact triggers an inflammatory response that damages the endothelial lining of the vein, causing it to contract and eventually collapse.

As the vein collapses, it is no longer able to hold blood, and the body’s natural healing process begins to seal off the vein. Over time, the treated vein is reabsorbed by the body and blood flow is rerouted to healthier, functional veins. This improves overall circulation and reduces the appearance of varicose veins.

Varithena sclerotherapy is typically an outpatient procedure with minimal downtime. It can offer significant relief from the symptoms associated with venous insufficiency, such as pain, swelling, and heaviness in the legs, as well as cosmetic improvement for those with visible varicose veins.
