Varithena® Sclerotherapy

Varithena sclerotherapy, also known as polidocanol injectable foam, is a minimally invasive treatment for venous insufficiency and varicose veins. Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in the veins of the legs do not function properly, causing blood to pool in the veins and leading to the development of varicose veins. Varithena sclerotherapy is designed to close off and collapse the affected veins, rerouting blood flow to healthier veins and alleviating symptoms associated with venous insufficiency.

The Varithena foam is a specialized medication composed of polidocanol, a sclerosing agent that causes damage to the endothelial lining of blood vessels, and a mixture of gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide). The foam is created by mixing the polidocanol solution with the gas mixture to create a stable, low-density foam.

During the procedure, a healthcare professional, usually a vascular specialist, will use ultrasound guidance to locate the problematic vein. They will then insert a small needle or catheter into the vein and inject the Varithena foam. The foam fills the entire diameter of the vein, causing the sclerosing agent to make direct contact with the vein walls. This contact triggers an inflammatory response that damages the endothelial lining of the vein, causing it to contract and eventually collapse.

As the vein collapses, it is no longer able to hold blood, and the body’s natural healing process begins to seal off the vein. Over time, the treated vein is reabsorbed by the body and blood flow is rerouted to healthier, functional veins. This improves overall circulation and reduces the appearance of varicose veins.

Varithena sclerotherapy is typically an outpatient procedure with minimal downtime. It can offer significant relief from the symptoms associated with venous insufficiency, such as pain, swelling, and heaviness in the legs, as well as cosmetic improvement for those with visible varicose veins.
